Taxpayers should not be paying for fat cat companies that have taken unnecessary financial risks, nor should we be paying to bail people out of mortgages they had no place entering into to begin with. Responsible citizens should live within their means and not expect everyone else to bail out their bad decisions.

Durbin Gives Update on Bailout Plan

Illinois U.S. Senator Dick Durbin says he doesn't foresee Congress reaching an agreement this weekend on a bailout of the financial markets. He says Congress will likely have to go into an overtime session.

Durbin says the initial $700 billion plan proposed by U.S. Secretary of the Treasury Henry Paulson has been rejected. He says the new version will have more government oversight.

DURBIN: $700 billion is a starting point. There are some ideas out here of providing it in installments so ultimately the new president will have some decision of allocating the money and Congress will have a voice in the final half of it.

Durbin says one of the things holding up negotiations is a measure he's pushing. It would allow bankruptcy judges to restructure mortgages for homeowners who can't afford it. Durbin also says House Republicans don't like where the bailout plan is heading and want to start over.

Meantime, Republican Illinois Congressman Don Manzullo says there's no rush; Congress still has time to put a deal together.

I called Dick's Chicago office and was told that they do not know how he is going to vote and when asked about how the calls are coming in the female administrator said that "calls were coming in very mixed."
